This is an excerpt from "Abriefhistoryoftime: A Brief History of Time, an ebook download". A lot has happened since the creation of our first wristwatch in 1837. The first ever pocket watch was introduced by Henry David Thoreau in 1849, who was also known as the first watchmaker. The concept of time zones had yet to be introduced during the 1800s, but it wasn't until 1904 that this was made possible with European traders creating more than one time zone for each country at a specific distance. There was no time for manufacturers to create a watch specifically for women until the late 1920s. The first woman watch, or Wristlet as it was called, was created by Cartier. Just like today's watches, these watches were worn on the wrist. The digital watch made its debut in 1969 with the Casio FD-503 model. This digital watch had an LCD display that was able to show digits that were one-inch tall. This allowed the user to show two digits on a single line on their LCD panel and seven lines of text within a 19/32 inch display window. It took a year later before digital watches became affordable. In 1972, Seiko produced the first LCD watch on the market at a price of $3500. In 1976, Seiko decided to make a cheaper version of their product and set out to produce an LCD watch that the average person could afford. The first affordable digital watch was created with a retail price of $2100. The panel used for this watch was approximately 23mm in size and featured a dot pitch of .65mm. This allowed them to create a clearer display that was easier for users to read. In 1978, portable calculator watches were introduced, which had been developed by Seiko's engineers. The first model was denoted as the 'PEW-20', which could be worn on the wrist. They used a dot-matrix LCD for displaying text and numbers. The first calculator watch introduced by Casio, which was later released by others, was actually a modified version of the Casio Mini Memo. It did not take long before Casio developed their own line of calculator watches with large buttons outfitted for better performance. These watches eventually sold more than 40 million units worldwide. Nowadays, it seems that digital watches are becoming outdated with many people jumping on to smartwatch technologies that are being offered by various tech manufacturers. In fact, the smartwatch industry is expected to grow from a $2 billion market in 2016 to a $13 billion megatrend due to the rise of wearable tech. Altimeter watches have been around since 1887, when Hering made a pocket watch with a built-in altimeter. The earliest known watch with an altimeter was made by Josiah C. Averill (1819–1903), who founded the Averill Manufacturing Company in 1867. The first known wristwatch with an altimeter was designed for use by pilots and military personnel called the "A-7" watch. cfa1e77820
